Environmental Legislation

Substantial new legislation has been introduced which restricts solvents and their use.

The most important legislation affecting solvent users in the UK is:

  • The Solvent Emissions Directive (SED) Regulations 2004
  • The reclassification of trichloroethylene 2002
  • The Integrated Pollution Control 1999
  • The Environmental Protection Act 1990

If the cleaning process is regulated by the 1990 Environmental Protection Act or the 1999 Integrated Pollution Control, then equipment must comply with the SED Regulations within the shortest possible time. If not, equipment must comply with health & safety legislation. This means either substituting solvent for a greener alternative, or replacing or modifying equipment.
